ABOUT US
Ohr Somayach is a unique and vibrant organization proud of its role as one of the preeminent centres that connect Jews to Torah and their Jewish heritage. We provide a warm and friendly community environment for both locals and visitors alike and offer a range of services and authentic learning opportunities that are engaging and accessible to individuals on all levels.
History
From the first Ohr Somayach minyan ever held in the Weizmann School Hall in 2000, the face of Cape Town Jewry was transformed. With the pioneering leadership of Rabbi Jonathan and Adina Shippel, it became cool and trendy to be part of the Ohr Somayach family and to be Jewishly observant.
The Ohr Somayach ethos of presenting authentic Judaism with a strong focus on learning in a warm and caring environment became the hallmark. Now ably led by Rabbi Shmuel and Rebbetzin Sara Ozhekh, a young and dynamic team, who bring a passionate and engaging approach to community leadership and Torah learning.
Mission and Vision
Our vision is to make everyone who walks through our doors feel a part of the Ohr Somayach Mishpocha. We seek to embody our name “Ohr Somayach” which means the light of Happiness, through our warm and genuine approach and love for Torah and Judaism. Our mission is to re-invigorate the connection Jews have to themselves, one another and the Torah way of life.

YOUTH SHUL
Our youth Shul invites teenagers, who are excited to come to daven with their friends in a minyan they know and love.
Our community welcomes each and everyone who walks through our doors. We wish our guests to feel a part of the Ohr Somayach Mishpocha.

Ohr Somayach's aim is to pass on traditional Jewish teachings and values as well as life skills with a deeper sense of self and personal connection to the Torah.
